Sociology
Building a better world
Sociologists examine topics like inequality, social mobility, and social responsibility in society’s cultural, political, and economic systems.
The Department of Sociology’s courses focus on how social forces and cultural contexts shape lived experience, how personal troubles are connected to broader social issues, and how social arrangements create constraints and opportunities for individuals and groups.
Our program prepares students to work with others and to effectively use information to solve problems and improve social conditions through their use of theoretical frameworks, analyses, and verbal and written communication.
The department offers a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Arts, and a minor in sociology as well as two interdisciplinary minors. The minor in community leadership draws on community-engaged learning and internships to equip students to apply their knowledge and skills to improve their communities. The minor in cultural competency trains students to better navigate an increasingly changing world and champion for underserved individual and groups. Most of our programs can be completed either in-person or online.
