Graduate students work closely with faculty mentors who are active performers, composers, and researchers. Through focused study, ensemble performance, and collaboration, students refine their craft while preparing for careers in performance, education, composition, conducting, and beyond.

Graduate Program Details

Admission to the School of Music graduate programs is a multi-step process. Applicants must:
  1. Apply for admission to Sam Houston State University through the Graduate and Professional School.
  2. Apply for admission to the School of Music by completing the School of Music application and all additional materials required for the specific program of interest.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution or an equivalent international degree. Admission is based on both acceptance to the university and the results of the School of Music audition or interview process.

Application Steps
1. Complete the SHSU Graduate Application through ApplyTexas.
2. Submit the School of Music Application Form.
3. Upload all supplemental materials through the SHSU Self-Service Center, including:

  • Resume or CV
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts
  • Two writing samples (Master of Music only):
    • Personal statement outlining interest in graduate study and career goals
    • Scholarly writing sample demonstrating research and academic writing ability
  • Written essay describing teaching experience and professional goals (Master of Arts in Band Studies only)
  • Documentation of at least two years of music teaching experience or the professional equivalent (Master of Arts in Band Studies only)

4. Complete an audition and/or interview as required by the specific degree program or area of study.

Audition and interview requirements vary by program. Applicants should contact their graduate coordinator for detailed information and specific requirements for each area of study.

A limited number of Graduate Assistantships are awarded each year on a competitive basis. These positions help offset tuition costs and provide professional experience in areas such as performance, ensemble direction, accompanying, music theory, music history, and departmental support.

Assistantships allow students to work closely with faculty and may include opportunities to assist with instruction, rehearsals, and performances.

Priority deadline: Applications received by January 7, 2025, receive priority consideration for assistantships.

Graduate students in the College of Arts and Media may be eligible for scholarships that recognize artistic talent, academic excellence, and creative potential.

Through Scholarships4Kats—SHSU’s centralized scholarship application—students are automatically matched to opportunities they qualify for, including those offered by the university, the College of Arts and Media, and individual departments.

Some departmental scholarships may require additional steps, such as an audition or portfolio submission. All applicants must complete the Scholarships4Kats application and should contact their department directly with questions about specific opportunities.

Graduate students in the School of Music have access to professional-quality spaces designed to support performance, rehearsal, and teaching. Facilities include the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center, featuring concert and recital halls, and the School of Music Building, which houses practice rooms, ensemble rehearsal halls, and teaching studios. These spaces provide an exceptional environment for musical growth, collaboration, and performance.
