Being an RA is more than a job—it’s an opportunity to make an impact, create community, and be part of something bigger than yourself. You’ll build meaningful relationships, support your peers, and help create a place where students feel welcomed, connected, and at home.
Residence Life provides housing for more than 3,500 residents across a variety of communities and living environments. As an RA, you’ll gain experiences that challenge you, inspire you, and help you grow while developing valuable skills that extend far beyond your time at SHSU.
Through this experience, you’ll strengthen your leadership and communication skills, learn to navigate conflict and manage crises, and discover what it means to lead, serve, and work with purpose. You’ll also have opportunities to attend conferences, connect with diverse communities, recruit and mentor future staff members, and work alongside a team invested in your success.
RAs also serve as Campus Security Authorities and play an important role in helping create a safe and supportive campus community.
We believe RAs are among the most important student leaders on campus because of the difference they can make in the lives of others. You don’t have to have everything figured out—you just need to be willing to show up, serve others, lead with purpose, and grow along the way.

- Why RA life? A. Betancourt "I became an RA because I love building a strong sense of community and creating a safe, welcoming environment for my residents, just as my RA did for me. My experience with my own RA inspired me to want to help others feel the same sense of belonging and support. Coming into a new college environment can be daunting, especially for freshmen, so I want to be someone my residents can rely on as they navigate this new chapter. Whether it’s being there to listen, having fun together, or creating engaging programs and activities, I want to help ease their minds and make them feel more comfortable in their community. Creating a sense of connection and belonging is one of the most important parts of being an RA and can make a meaningful difference in the freshman experience."
