Study Abroad Checklist

​​Thinking about studying abroad? Here is your starting point! Learn how to plan your international experience with helpful presentations and timeline checklists.​

To begin, please upload the Study Abroad 101 presentations to familiarize yourself with the process of studying abroad. (include Study Abroad 101 ppt, and checklist timelines for fall and spring) Study Abroad 101 Spring 2026 (Updated Feb 2026) & Study Abroad Program Checklist Flyer 

  • Timeframe (When you can study abroad?)  
  • Location (Where you want to study abroad?)  
  • Courses (What courses do you plan to take while abroad and how they will contribute to your graduation requirements?)  
  • Cost (Your financial feasibility to study abroad)  
  • Exchange programs  
    • Students study abroad at one of our partner universities for a summer, semester, or academic year. Students pay SHSU tuition and fees, while housing and living expenses are paid to the partner university.  
  • Faculty-led programs  
    • Led by an SHSU professor, a cohort of students enroll in an SHSU course and earn SHSU credit. Typically held in the summer and winter, students pay SHSU tuition and fees, plus a program fee required to cover logistical costs.    
  • Affiliated programs  
    • Students study abroad through an affiliated program facilitated by a 3rd-party provider for a summer, semester, or academic year. Vetted by SHSU, students will pay the 3rd-party provider directly for all costs, which typically include tuition, housing, and other logistical fees.  
  • National Student Exchange  
    • Students study at institutions within the US (including US territories), or Canada for the semester or academic year. Students pay SHSU tuition and fees, while housing and living expenses are paid to the partner university.  
  • GEC Study Abroad Advisors  
    • To offer guidance in identifying viable programs, completion of the application process, and preparation for your studies abroad  
  • Academic Advisors  
    • To verify that the courses you plan to take abroad are articulated to ensure they meet graduation requirements

The GEC accepts appointments through Campus Connect in person or virtually. Our availability falls under the student resources appointment type.

GEC Walk-In Hours:
Mon - Tue: 9am-11am 
Wed - Thu: 2pm-4pm 
In-person walk-in advising takes place in Farrington Building Room 116.
