SHSU, LSCS Reaffirm Commitment to Transfer Students
Sam Houston State University and the Lone Star College System (LSCS) celebrated their renewed agreement to facilitate students’ transfer from any of the Lone Star College campuses to SHSU at a signing ceremony on Oct. 28. On top of celebrating the continued collaboration between SHSU and LSCS, the event brought in other universities partnering with LSCS through Guaranteed Transfer Partnership Agreements (GTPA).
The agreement between SHSU and LSCS provides the framework to continue developing transfer degree plans, offer a Bearkat Transfer Scholarship to eligible SHSU applicants and establish the Bearkat Bound program to create specialized pathways, including fee waivers and scholarships, for members of the LSC Honor College or LSC Global Scholars program to join SHSU and its Elliott T. Bowers Honors College.
“Many of our students are transfer students from Lone Star College,” SHSU Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Sumanth Yenduri said. “This extended agreement with the Lone Star College System allows us to continue removing barriers and easing the process for those students to come to SHSU and achieve their academic goals.”
Through this partnership, SHSU and LSCS are strengthening connections between community college and university education, helping students make informed academic decisions and stay focused on earning a bachelor’s degree.
“One of our primary goals at Lone Star College System is connecting to bridges to prosperity,” said Mario K. Castillo, J.D., LSCS chancellor. “These partnerships help create a more seamless path for students to transfer to one of our five partner universities and to continue working toward their academic goals.”
Along with SHSU, other GTPA partners include Prairie View A&M University, Texas State University, Texas Tech University and University of Houston-Downtown.
“The fact that 100,000 students now have five incredible options to choose from is really the takeaway from today’s event,” said Texas Sen. Paul Bettencourt, chair of the Texas Senate Committee on Higher Education. “It cuts through all the noise; it cuts through all the worry of, ‘Am I taking the right classes?’ They’re telling students what they need to do and giving them options. It’s a fantastic step forward for the state of Texas.”
