Shape the Future of Dance
The MFA in Dance at SHSU is a terminal degree that prepares artist-scholars for careers in higher education, choreography, and performance. Students engage in advanced studio practice, creative research, pedagogy, and interdisciplinary collaboration. With mentorship from experienced faculty, MFA candidates develop original choreographic work, teach undergraduate courses, and explore the role of dance in academic and community settings. This immersive program supports both artistic and professional growth, equipping graduates to lead and innovate in the field.
How Do I Apply to the MFA Program?
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and complete both the SHSU graduate application and the Department of Dance audition process. Admission is based on academic credentials, artistic ability, and program capacity. The audition includes technique classes, an interview, and a choreography sample. Candidates are encouraged to apply early and may audition even if all materials have not yet been submitted.
Are Graduate Assistantships Available?
Yes. MFA candidates are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships, which offer valuable teaching experience and financial support. Assistantships may include teaching undergraduate courses, supporting department productions, or assisting with administrative and creative projects. Positions are competitive and awarded based on experience, skill, and departmental need.
