The Texas State University System’s Public Art Program, in partnership with Sam Houston State University and Clare Christie Fine Art, is proud to announce the installation of Whirlwind, a life-sized bucking horse sculpture created by acclaimed local artist and sculptor Clare Christie.
The dynamic bronze sculpture was recently installed at SHSU’s Gibbs Ranch facility and will be officially unveiled to the public during SHSU’s annual rodeo event, Nov. 10-11.
Whirlwind fuses abstract equine anatomy, linear design and rodeo-inspired movement, celebrating the deep connection between agriculture, rodeo culture and fine art. Its fluid lines and open spaces capture the raw power, grace and energy of a horse mid-buck, symbolizing both tradition and innovation.
“This unique style was born from my lifetime of training and observing horses,” said Clare Christie. “After 35 years of sculpting and painting horses in motion realistically, I began using linear techniques to highlight their energy and capture the essence of their beauty.”
Bringing that vision to life in bronze was a significant challenge. Christie partnered with Clint Howard, founder of Pyrology Foundry and Studio, whose expertise helped transform her innovative concept into a monumental work of art.
“Working with Clare has been an incredible journey,” said Howard. “When she first brought me a linear piece years ago, I knew it had the potential to grow into something monumental. This sculpture represents years of refining the process and pushing creative and technical boundaries.”
