Being a trailblazer in education leadership was not a role Sheree Bogany grew into, it was what she was born to do. Her drive to be the best in her field and elevate those around her has been recognized time and again, most recently through H-E-B’s Excellence in Education 2025 Secondary Principal Award and Texas Association of Secondary School Principals Region 2 Principal of the Year.
The 2001 Bearkat alum started out at global insurance organization American International Group (AIG) with plans to work her way to Wall Street. In pursuit of that goal, Bogany knew she would need a Master of Business Administration and decided to teach while becoming a student again herself.
“That was my plan, but God’s plan was very strategic, and it wasn’t for me to leave education,” she said. “I started teaching at Houston ISD’s Dropout Recovery Campus in my first year, then moved east to work at Galena Park ISD, which was very instrumental in my leadership journey.”
Bogany taught for four years in Galena Park ISD while earning her master’s degree from the University of Houston – Clear Lake, equipping herself with the credentials needed to take her career to the next level as a middle school assistant principal.
Always one to reach for new learning experiences, she worked her way up to high school assistant principal and eventually switched districts for an opportunity as associate principal in Fort Bend ISD. Working at the two campuses she served in FBISD gave her the tools and experience she needed to later become the first female African American principal in the history of Splendora High School. She continued to be a trailblazer in her next and most recent school district, Beeville ISD, as its first African American principal.
“I don’t take those titles lightly because I know that it takes a lot to sit in those positions, being the first is hard work,” Bogany said. “A lot comes at you, positive and negative, and you have to be resilient. Being a trailblazer is hard, but it’s necessary so that you open doors for others that come behind you.”
With her latest award from H-E-B, Bogany has certainly set those who follow up for success. The honor is one of the most esteemed accolades for public school leaders in Texas and earned Beeville ISD’s A.C. Jones High School a $25,000 grant. The grant serves as a parting gift to the final school district she has worked in, as Bogany is now bridging the gap between secondary and higher education as an account manager executive for Abilene Christian University. Bogany herself received $10,000 in personal recognition from H-E-B and will be featured in an upcoming commercial for the Texas grocery icon.
“Yesterday, I was in Houston ISD, which is the district that I not only went to school in, but built my career in. I think that life comes full circle and I’m thankful for my time at Sam Houston State University and all the Bearkats along the way for helping me get here.”
