Kroger representatives, along with faculty, staff, and students from Sam Houston State University, gathered yesterday to celebrate the grocer’s three-year commitment to the school’s food pantry totaling $30,000.

“Kroger’s generous gift to the food pantry at Sam Houston State University will allow us to continue our work in supporting our Bearkat community,” said Kathleen Gilbert, food pantry director. “The grocer’s contribution will allow us to maintain equitable food access, helping drive change so our students can succeed academically, personally, and professionally.”

Randall Repine, Kroger store leader and SHSU alumnusThe food pantry collects and distributes to students and those in need and partners with local businesses, organizations, and volunteers to support its operations. In the last academic year, the pantry served more than 3,200 people and provided over 76,700 pounds of food.

“Kroger is committed to creating communities free of hunger and waste, and we are honored to further advance Sam Houston State University’s mission to help students thrive in every sense, especially through nutrition,” said Teresa Dickerson, head of corporate affairs for Kroger Houston. “Kroger proudly employs Sam Houston State University students and alumni, and we’re proud to now be even more deeply connected to the Huntsville community through our gift of $30,000 to the campus food pantry.”

To expand its services, the pantry recently launched a mobile unit. This allows the pantry team to reach those who may not be able to visit the pantry's physical location due to limited transportation, health conditions, or other challenges.

The food pantry plays an important role in supporting the health and well-being of students and the community and relies on donations and volunteers to successfully operate and serve those in need.
