The sound of cannon booms and the smell of kettle corn await guests for General Sam Houston Day. The free community event, hosted by The Sam Houston Memorial Museum & Republic of Texas Presidential Library, will take place Sat. April 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the museum grounds.

The one-day event is a revamped version of the museum’s previous Folk Festival. With a more enhanced emphasis on 19th century history, General Sam Houston Day is dedicated to honoring the life and times of Sam Houston (from 1793-1863). The festivities will include historical demonstrations, hands-on activities, period music and more.

“We have partnered with people and historic sites from across Texas, including our friends with San Jacinto, Fanthorp Inn, Fort McKavett, Goliad and more to bring Texas history up close and make it an interactive experience for our visitors,” said Derrick Birdsall, museum director.  “We will also have two of the lower rooms of the Steamboat House open for the public to access.”
