Spring 2022
SHSU Media Contact: Emily Binetti

Face 2 face 2Last year marked the return of the Face to Face Scholarship Luncheon. This event is one of the most beloved on campus because it provides benefactors and scholarship recipients a unique opportunity to learn more about each other.

Ashley Fairfield Riley (’02), benefactor, spoke about how upon graduation she wanted to give back to SHSU. She and a friend created an annual scholarship in honor of

Professor Emeritus William Green who made an impact on their educational journeys. They began by making smaller gifts towards the scholarship and today that fund has

grown into an endowment that will benefit students for years to come.Yvette Mendoza, a sophomore majoring in political science, who is this year’s recipient of the Andrew and Ila Martinez Scholarship, addressed the audience at the event.

Face 2 face 1“I know I speak for all students when I say I am blessed to be at Sam Houston State University. We attend school on a beautiful campus, we are fortunate to have caring faculty and staff, and we are blessed to have you, the donors, who provide needed funds to SHSU students so that we can continue to grow into our best selves at our wonderful university,” Yvette said.

Through the generosity of our donors, SHSU has nearly 722 scholarship funds. Last year, 3,825 scholarships were awarded to 3,092 different students totaling almost $7.5 million.
