Philanthropy Today: Senior Class Legacy – Jeremiah Mathews

Spring 2022
SHSU Media Contact: Emily Binetti

JMathewsThe Senior Class Legacy Campaign started as a way to bring an awareness to philanthropy and to cultivate a culture of giving among students. Since the first scholarship of $1,000 was awarded from the Class of 2012, the Senior Class Legacy has continued to grow. The Class of 2021 raised enough for 11 scholarships of $1,000 each to be awarded.

One of the donors from the Class of 2021 is Jeremiah Mathews, who graduated in December with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He is continuing to pursue his Master of Science in Criminal Justice here at Sam Houston State.

When asked why he wanted to give to the Senior Class Legacy Scholarship Fund, he said “I donated as a way of paying it forward. I have been fortunate to have received numerous scholarships as an undergraduate student at Sam Houston State University, so I know first-hand what a great role they play in helping students complete their degrees.”

Jeremiah added, “I thank God, family, and friends for helping me reach my goals. I give special thanks to my mother for being tough on me when I needed a push in the right direction and giving me grace when I needed grace.”
