Sam Houston State University’s College of Arts & Media is delighted to welcome master pianist Costantino Mastroprimiano from the Conservatory of Perugia, Italy for his American debut as part of the CAM Artist Series. Performing some of the most popular sonatas of classical piano repertoire, he will take the stage on Apr. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.

Costantino Mastroprimiano represents a striking personality in the scene of the fortepiano. He plays on either historical instruments or on modern copies of those which allows him to express directly what each composer wrote for the intended instrument. Each instrument is unique and has its own characteristics in terms of finesses in the playing mechanism and sound quality. This depends on the period in which it was built and on how it survived through time. As a pianist, Mastroprimiano has to adapt to each one, as the instrument determines the repertoire that can best be played on it.

In addition to performing at festivals across his home country of Italy and Europe, he also teaches masterclasses in piano music, chamber music, and lieder. He has recorded an extensive discography on various labels, including his recording on 18 CDs for Brilliant Classics of the complete sonatas of Muzio Clementi (1752-1832). He currently records all the sonatas on fortepiano of Ludwig van Beethoven.

“Early music plays an important role in the amazing portfolio of research and performance activity. An extraordinary artist in this field, Professor Mastroprimiano is the perfect guest for the CAM Artist Series,” said Mario Aschauer, associate professor in the SHSU School of Music, who will join Mastroprimiano on the program for a rendition of Mozart’s “Sonata for Piano Four Hands.”
