Sharmistha SelfSharmistha (Shar) Self, professor of Economics, has been named the new dean of the Sam Houston State University College of Business Administration (COBA), effective June 15.

Self comes to SHSU from the College of Business at the University of Northern Iowa, where she is the Robert James Waller Professor of Economics, head of the Department of Economics, head of the Department of Finance, and co-chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in the college. In addition, she manages two centers there, the Center for Economic Education and the Center for Real Estate Education.

“I am excited to see how Dr. Self’s leadership experience, dedication to academia, and innovative mindset will help her lead the College of Business Administration and its faculty, staff, and students forward,” Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael T. Stephenson said. “On top of her impressive research publication record, I am confident Dr. Self’s innovative ideas and strategic mindset will be instrumental in this demanding role.”

Prior to her time at the University of Northern Iowa, Self was a faculty member at Missouri State University from 2006 to 2017, where she served a term as Faculty Senate chair.

COBA Dean Mitchell Muehsam will retire May 31. An interim dean will be named at a later date.

COBA offers a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in twelve major fields of study, as well as a 4.5-year degree program for qualified students leading to a specialization in PGA Golf Management. At the graduate level, the College offers an MBA, MS in Accounting, MS in Project Management, and an online Executive MBA in Banking and Financial Institutions.
