Carlos HernandezSam Houston State University President Alisa White announced today that Carlos Hernandez, chief financial officer and senior vice president for operations at Sam Houston State University, will retire at the end of the academic year in May 2022.

In an announcement to the campus community, White commented, “I am grateful for the numerous contributions Carlos has made to this university, allowing it to grow and thrive during times of great change. Under his leadership and guidance, we have made wise investments into numerous projects and initiatives that have returned significant improvements in critical areas such as student success, academics, campus life and our workplace.”

Hernandez joined SHSU in March 2014 as acting vice president for finance and operations and later was selected to permanently fill the position. In 2019, he was promoted to chief financial officer and senior vice president for operations.

Throughout his time at SHSU, Hernandez has been responsible for managing the university’s investment portfolio, as well as overseeing the departments of human resources and risk management, public safety services, controller's office, budget, procurement and business services, facilities management and auxiliary services including university dining.

As the university’s financial steward, Hernandez balanced growth with fiscal responsibility. Under his leadership, the university has maintained a strong financial position, managed expenses and enabled SHSU to invest in new building projects, including the construction of seven new campus buildings, the Lowman Student Center renovation/expansion project, additional parking and the construction of the College of Osteopathic Medicine building located in Conroe, Texas.

A certified public accountant, Hernandez previously served as CFO and vice president for finance and administration at the University of North Texas-Dallas; associate vice president and controller for the University of North Texas and controller for the UNT System; and associate vice president and comptroller at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Hernandez earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting, his master’s degree in higher education administration and his doctorate in education, all from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Amanda Withers, assistant vice president of finance and controller, will serve as the interim chief financial officer and senior vice president beginning June 1, 2022. A national search for the position will begin immediately.
