Mikah Boyd

Mikah Boyd
Kirbyville, Texas
Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications

Mikah Boyd’s passion for journalism led her to Sam Houston State University’s mass communications department as a transfer student.

“I faced a challenge pretty early on when I started college at another university. It wasn't the right school for me, and I began to see my mental health suffer. I stuck it out for the rest of the semester and completed the transfer process to SHSU,” Boyd said.

Things may have started out a bit rocky, but once she arrived at SHSU, she soon found her sense of belonging, a strong support system, and things began to improve.

“The differences between my previous college and SHSU were apparent right away. I wasn’t just another person paying tuition, I was a student ready to learn. I saw this in the way that my courses were structured, and how professors knew my name and wanted to do their best to help me succeed.”

This connection with faculty opened several doors of opportunity for Boyd including an on-campus job directly related to her career plan.

“By my second semester as a mass communications student, I already had a job writing for the university’s online news, Today@Sam. My student-worker position allowed me to build a portfolio of work with numerous published articles.”

While still honing her skills as a student, Boyd was able to also secure a second job as a freelance writer for the Huntsville Item.

“My confidence as a professional journalist happened because of my time as a student at SHSU, both in the classroom and on the job. Through my studies and through my student work experiences, I gained the skills, knowledge and self-assurance that has truly set me up for success in the workforce. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
