Bearkats Share Stories Of Success With Kat Talks

Inspiration can come from many places in life. Often, it comes from reading a book, watching a motivating movie or even hearing a rousing speech. This semester, the Academic Success Center aims to inspire Bearkat students with Kat Talks, a powerful speaker series for students that connects faculty, staff, students and alumni through stories of success.
Kat Talks is similar in spirit to the popular Ted Talk series, as Bearkats will share real stories of their powerful, personal journeys and give advice on how to achieve academic and professional goals. The first speaker will be Dana Hoyt, president of Sam Houston State, as she presents the topic “Being all-in, every day” on Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. in the LSC Orange Ballroom.
“Student success is a core value of our university,” Hoyt said. “This new speaker series is a great way to show our students that every successful journey has a beginning and it is important to keep pursing your passions to get there. Motivation, resiliency, grit and mindset are some of the most important skills to develop during your college experience.”
Each speaker throughout the semester will give a 20 to 30 minute presentation, followed by a Q&A with the audience. The goal is to present students with real and relatable examples and ideas to use on their own journey of student success.
“The Academic Success Center provides tutoring, mentoring, workshops, and many other academic resources for students” said Mary Catherine Niño Breen, executive director of the Academic Success Center. “However, with this speaker series we are branching out to connect our students with real world Bearkat examples of success they can follow.”
