Here to Help” is a series focused on educating students on all the services available at Sam Houston State University. Many times students are unaware that these services are often offered at no cost with a Bearkat OneCard. If your department or student service would like to be featured for a future story email

Tax season started January 27 and for many SHSU student workers, filing Federal Income Taxes is uncharted territory. For those whose household income is $56,000 or less, Sam Houston State University’s Bearkat Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Center will provide free federal income tax assistance.

The VITA Center, located in the Smith-Hutson Business Building, helps qualified students and employees file their taxes in one of two ways; physical preparation or drop-off preparation.

As the name implies, physical preparation requires all taxpayers to be present during the tax-review process. These appointments take between 90 to 120 minutes as the IRS certified tax preparer reviews the filer’s information and prepares the return. Students and employees wanting to use this method should allocate time for the full length of the appointment in order to get the most out of their experience.

Those using the drop-off preparation method simply leave their information with a preparer and do not have to wait while the return is being drawn up. The only other requirement is that a return appointment must be made and all taxpayers must be present to review the return with the preparer.

Appointments are available from February 6 to April 9. To make an appointment, contact the VITA Center at or call 936-294-1263.
