Get ready for a fun run with a Texas Independence Day twist.

The inaugural Sam Houston Birthday and Texas Independence Day 5K Fun Run, also known as the Run with Sam 5K, is slated for Saturday, March 2. Proceeds from the race will go toward scholarships for the Sam Houston State University journalism program in the mass communications department.

“We started the Run with Sam 5K to engage residents of Huntsville, students, faculty members of Sam Houston State University and our participating sponsors to support all community journalism efforts,” said Sue Brown of the Texas Press Association. “Sam Houston is our inspiration for the race. Not only was he a Texas hero who fought and defeated Santa Anna, he served as a Texas Representative, U.S. Senator, Governor and President of the Republic of Texas.”

AgITPhotos09Plaques will be awarded to the male and female winners, with the top three male and female winners in their respective age group being awarded medals. The age divisions for the race are 13-and-under, 14-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and Grand Masters 70 and up.

“Anytime people can gather to enjoy an event whether they participate in an activity or not and help raise funds to help someone is a win-win situation,” Brown added. “Avid runners, casual joggers and walkers of any age should join in to enjoy fellowship, possibly win a medal and promote well-being of body and mind.”

Check-in on race day will be from 7-7:45 a.m., with the race beginning at 8 a.m. The 5K course begins and ends on the Sam Houston State University campus, with the race and registration held at Parking Lot 62 on 15th St.

“We are hoping this event will grow each year and that the Huntsville and SHSU community become involved so we are able to donate scholarship funds, promote, support and protect journalists' access to information,” Brown said.

The registration fee for the race is $20, with t-shirts given to the first 100 runners to register.
