Sam Houston State University President Dana Hoyt recapped some of the past year’s highlights and presented plans for the future during the annual “State of the University” address on Aug. 30 in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center.

In addition, select faculty and staff were recognized for years of service and several staff members were honored. (See photos here.)

Hoyt began her remarks by highlighting student, faculty and department accomplishments including the Student Money Management Center’s No. 5 ranking in Top 50 Financial Literacy Programs of 2018.  “We are doing a lot of good,” Hoyt said.

On the topic of campus renovation and growth, Hoyt spoke about the newly opened Life Science Building and the construction underway with the LSC expansion and future Art Complex building. Faculty and staff were also updated on the progress of the proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine (applicant status – seeking accreditation).

She recapped her address with information on the university’s strategic plan and the university’s core values - academic excellence, student success, innovation focus, operational efficiency and enduring traditions.

Regarding the budget, Hoyt shared an update on the 2018 fiscal year and summary for 2019, including information on how the university is using new resources.

Currently, SHSU is in the process of seeking reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. In her presentation, Hoyt outlined the reaffirmation timeline and explained the next steps of the process. She also thanked deans and faculty in the audience who have played a valuable role in this progression.

In academics, Hoyt stressed the important work of faculty involved on the Frontier Set team – a group of SHSU instructors devoted to improving graduation rates, especially for low-income, first-generation and minority students.  Her presentation also highlighted the university’s focus on enhancing diversity in both student and faculty populations.
