The Sam Houston Memorial Museum is pleased to announce its 2019 Photo Contest. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum photo contest. Casey Roon, Curator of Exhibits, wanted to bring something new to the Museum, and with her love of photography, the photo contest was born.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for amateur photographers of all ages to have their work displayed prominently in a gallery setting of an accredited museum,” Roon said. “To celebrate our 10th year, if you enter two photos in all five categories, we will accept your 10th entry free.”
There are no residency requirements to enter the contest; the contest is open to anyone and everyone who is a non-professional photographer, and would like to win the $100 for Best in Show, $75 for Reserve Grand Champion or $20 for first, $15 for second, and $10 for third place in each of the five (5) categories.
Ten Curator’s Choice awards will also be given. The categories for submission this year are ‘Abstract,’ ‘Pets,’ ‘Architecture,’ ‘Faces/Figures,’ and ‘Nature.’ Deadline to enter is Tuesday, Oct. 1 by 4:00 p.m.
Cost per entry is $5.00 and payment method is cash only. Each photo entry must have its own entry form. Photographs must be submitted as full 8”x10,” unmounted, unframed, and with no border. No exceptions. Photos will not be accepted that have titles and names printed on the front of the image, and entries must be suitable for family viewing. Photographers may enter as many categories, as they like, but no more than two (2) photos per category.
All submitted photos will be on display in the Exhibit Gallery at the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center. Winners will be determined by an odd-numbered panel in a private judging session. The Awards and Artists Reception will be held on Monday, Dec. 2 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. where the winners will be announced.
The photo contest exhibit will open to the public on Friday, Nov. 1 and stay on display until Jan. 19, 2020.
The complete list of contest rules and application form(s) can be picked up at the Main Museum, Wigwam Neosho Museum Store, or the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center any time during museum hours or downloaded directly from the museum’s website at: samhoustonmemorialmuseum.com.
Any other inquiries or questions should be directed to Roon at (936) 294-3292 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
