MassComm Professor Heading To Hollywood

Sam Houston State University is headed to Hollywood. Elisa Herrmann, assistant professor of mass communication at SHSU, has been selected to participate in the Television Academy Foundation’s 2018 Faculty Seminar Program. Members of the Television Academy selected just 25 professors from colleges and universities nationwide to participate in the prestigious program.

First launched in 1987, the Foundation’s annual seminar offers faculty a comprehensive program designed to enhance knowledge and in turn enrich learning environments. The faculty fellows will gain the latest information on the television and content development industries from top entertainment professionals during a week-long Southern California seminar from Nov. 5-9, 2018.

"The Television Academy Foundation has provided professors from across the country the opportunity to learn from working television professionals in Los Angeles,” said Nancy Robinson, director of the Foundation’s education programs. “The Faculty Seminar provides an immersive experience that is designed to create and sustain unique ties between media and teaching communities."

The seminar will include panel discussions with broadcast and cable networks’ programming and scheduling executives, legal experts and cutting-edge content creators. Private studio tours and trips to top Hollywood production facilities to meet with producers, observe production, and get first-hand updates on the latest in television technologies are also part of the program.

“It is a very nice honor. I think I was clear in my application that I will not take this opportunity for granted,” Herrmann said.

Herrmann was tasked with penning a letter to the Academy along with her resume in her application. She explained to them why she felt SHSU’s Mass Communication Department deserved to be represented in order to better train students.

“Having this opportunity to learn from the experts the Academy is providing and be able to pass it along to our students will be an amazing experience. This will enrich my teaching a lot, because I will be able to tell my students about the latest trends. I will be able to bring back answers to who is it the industry want to hire, and what we need to be teaching them in order to get in to the workforce effectively.”

Herrmann is also an independent filmmaker. Her short documentary film Rodrigo Herrmann – Life and Works premiered in Brazil in 2016 and has since been screened at several international film festivals, including the 2016 Cannes Film Festival – Short Film Corner.
