The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will open its doors free of charge on Sept. 23, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s thirteenth annual Museum Day Live! event.
The initiative is a day in which participating museums across the United States emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington D.C.-based facilities, which offer free admission every day and open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day Live! ticket.
“We are excited to participate in this annual event hosted by the Smithsonian magazine,” said Megan Buro, marketing coordinator at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. “It’s our seventh year to take part in it, and it is an opportunity for visitors to take advantage of free admission to the Museum to learn about General Sam Houston and the legacy he and his family have left Texas and the United States.
“We will also be hosting a pioneer skills demonstration at our Bear Bend Cabin from 9 a.m. to noon,” she said. “Pioneers required a wide array of tools and skills to help them survive on the frontier, so visitors will get to learn about some of those skills.”
Smithsonian recognizes the extraordinary power of museums, and other cultural institutions, to provide visitors with insight and inspiration. The event represents a nationwide commitment to boundless curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge wherever you are.
Over 200,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event, and this year’s event is expected to attract more museum-goers than ever before.
As part of Sam Houston State University, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum is dedicated to preserving the memory of Sam Houston and his times. The museum complex includes approximately 15 acres. The Main Museum houses the major collection of Houston memorabilia, two original Houston residences are preserved, the Woodland Home and Steamboat House, as well as Sam’s law office, kitchen, museum store, and other exhibit structures.
Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Museum Day Live! ticket is available for download at Smithsonian.com/museumday.
Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues. One ticket per email address is permitted. For more information about Museum Day Live! 2017 and a full list of participating museums and cultural institutions, visit Smithsonian.com/museumday.
