Campus Safety & Transportation

The Department of Public Safety Services maintains a secure academic environment across university grounds. The department is comprised of the Parking and Transportation Office and the University Police Department.

Parking and Transportation Office

Parking and Transportation is responsible for providing and maintaining more than 30 separate parking areas and multiple parking garages, totaling over 7,600 parking spaces across campus. Recent enhancements include a new permit mail-out program allowing over 1,700 customers the convenience of receiving their parking permits through the mail.

University Police Department

The University Police Department strives to provide police services that enhance the campus environment. Officers focus their services on the protection of all persons within its jurisdiction, providing crime prevention education, and other services to help ensure academic success.

Sam Houston State University has consistently received acclaim as one of the safest universities in the nation.  Most recently, SHSU was named to the 2012 Top Ten Safest Colleges and Universities list by collegesafe.com. The national ranking was the lone university in both the state of Texas as well as the West South Central region of the United States.
