Writing is only the beginning

Our 48-hour full-residency program includes hands-on training through internships and courses in editing, publishing, and literature. The course "The Writer's Life" prepares students for their MFA experience and future careers.

We provide financial support through three $10,000 fellowships (renewable for three years) and graduate assistantships. The program develops writers in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, featuring intensive instruction from dedicated faculty.

Students complete fifteen hours of workshops and finish with an MFA thesis—a collection of stories, poems, essays, or a novel. Competitive fellowships and assistantships are available, allowing students to work with the Texas Review and Texas Review Press.

When can I apply?
  • For full consideration, apply by March 15
  • New MFA students start in the fall only
What funding opportunities are available?
Each year the program awards three fellowships for $10,000 per year, renewable for a total of up to three years. Each fellowship comes with a graduate assistant position, which has its own stipend of $9,800 per year and eligibility for health benefits. All students who apply by the deadline are automatically considered for this fellowship.
