Degree Program Overview

The 19-hour minor in equine science may be selected to accompany any approved major at Sam Houston State University except interdisciplinary agriculture.

The equine science minor allows undergraduate students the opportunity to specialize in equine science through a combination of hands-on labs, training courses, and traditional classroom lectures.

A variety of courses on equine care, nutrition, health, management, and behavior provides students with increased hands-on skills and foundational science that offer a competitive advantage in an ever-changing industry.

Student Groups and Competitive Teams

Students are encouraged to participate in the Collegiate Horseman’s Association (CHA). CHA provides opportunities for its members to explore and become involved in many aspects of the equine industry. Anyone with an interest in horses is invited to join—regardless of their experience. Competitive teams include the intercollegiate horse judging team and the versatility ranch horse team. Both teams travel throughout the United States competing at major equine events.

The Agriculture Complex, located a short distance from the main campus, includes horse stalls, round pens, a large indoor arena, and a state-of-the-art panel walker.
