make sense of a complex world

At SHSU, Political Science begins with curiosity—about how people, power, and institutions shape our world. Our students explore how governments, markets, and societies interact and learn to make sense of the systems that influence everyday life.

From your very first courses, you’ll grapple with big questions about political behavior, public policy, and civic life. You’ll develop the ability to think critically, analyze arguments, and communicate ideas clearly—skills that prepare you to thrive in a rapidly changing world, including in careers that don’t yet exist.

Our graduates pursue diverse paths in law, business, government, advocacy, education, and public service. They stand out for their ability to connect ideas, see patterns others miss, and translate complex information into clear, actionable insights.

At SHSU, learning extends beyond the classroom. You’ll have opportunities to represent the university at Model United Nations, study abroad to experience global politics firsthand, and gain practical experience through internships with organizations such as the U.S. Congress, the Texas Legislature, the City of Huntsville, and a variety of nonprofit organizations.

The Department of Political Science offers BA and BS degrees as well as minors in Legal Studies, Political Science, and Public Administration & Public Policy. Whatever your interests, you’ll find a community of curious minds ready to ask questions, wrestle with ideas, and see the world more clearly.

What’s the Difference Between the Two Degrees?

The Bachelor of Science (BS) requires additional hours of a social science (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science, communication studies, etc.) in math and science, whereas the Bachelor of Arts (BA) requires additional hours of a foreign language (e.g., Spanish, French, American Sign, etc.).

Where and How Is This Program Available?

Both the BA and BS programs in Political Science are offered in person on our Huntsville campus or online. The online option allows you to complete your four-year degree with flexibility.
