Health coaching is private, but not confidential. Any information shared during a coaching session will stay between you and your coach, unless there are specific disclosures. Specifically, if you share that you are a danger to yourself or others, or if you disclose an experience of sexual misconduct or sexual assault, your coach is required to report this information o the appropriate authorities and/or campus offices.
Counseling services from the SHSU Counseling Center are confidential, meaning that what is shared during a counseling session will stay between you and your counselor. The only instance where your counselor may need to share information with an authority is if you indicate that you are a threat to yourself or others.
Health coaching is provided by a trained coach who can help you learn about specific health topics, improve lifestyle habits and routines, and provide support for you as you work towards your goals. Coaches are not mental health professionals and cannot diagnose or treat mental health conditions. If your coach determines you would benefit from counseling support, they may discontinue your session and refer to the SHSU Counseling Center.
Licensed mental health professionals provide counseling and therapy for concerns related to anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, etc.
