SHSU Online Featured in Statewide Innovation Playbook

I'm excited to share that Sam Houston State University’s SHSU Online has been featured in the Adapting to Innovation Playbook, a new statewide resource highlighting innovative practices in Texas higher education. The playbook, developed for institutional leaders across the state, showcases SHSU as a model for how shortened academic terms can expand access and support student success. 

Our case study, titled "Choose Your Own Adventure," highlights three key innovations we've developed: our 7.5-week accelerated terms, our Premium Distance Learning (PDL) five-week courses, and the launch of SamPoly, our new polytechnic college offering workforce-aligned certificates and degrees in high-demand fields like AI, paralegal studies, and computer information systems. 

What makes SHSU's approach stand out? The playbook emphasizes how our flexible term options align directly with our institutional identity as a Hispanic-Serving Institution serving a large population of first-generation students. By offering multiple pathways to degree completion, from traditional 15-week semesters to five-week intensive courses, we're giving students control over their academic timeline while maintaining their work and family commitments. 

The case study also recognizes some of the thoughtful design choices that make these accelerated formats work: our use of open educational resources (OER) to ensure students have immediate, affordable access to materials; our consistent weekly module structure that reduces cognitive load; and our commitment to balancing high-quality media production with sound instructional design principles. 

This recognition reflects the collaborative work of our entire SHSU Online team: instructional designers, multimedia specialists, faculty partners, and college leadership who have worked together to create these innovative pathways. It also validates what we've seen in practice: that when we design with intention and put students at the center, we can create flexible, rigorous learning experiences that meet learners where they are.
