SHSU Online Launches New Student Success & Growth Team

As part of Sam Houston State University’s ongoing commitment to agility, innovation, and strategic growth, SHSU Online has launched a new team within the Online Professional Learning (OPL) unit. Dedicated to supporting online student enrollment, persistence, and success, the Online Student Success & Growth team strengthens connections with both prospective and current students through coordinated enrollment campaigns, a caseload-based success model, and personalized outreach throughout the student lifecycle. 

We are excited to introduce the team members and share an overview of the expertise they bring to this new initiative. 

Dana Grafton | Associate Director 

Dana Grafton is a familiar face at SHSU Online. Having spent eight of her thirteen years at the university as a Finance and Business Operations Specialist, Dana was recently promoted to Associate Director for the Online Student Success & Growth team. She looks forward to building collaborative relationships and expanding student-centered strategies. Outside of work, Dana enjoys time with her family, leads a Bible study group, and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Communication Studies at SHSU. 

Katelyn Allen | Online Student Success Specialist 

A “two-time” Bearkat,” Katelyn Allen holds both a Bachelor (Marketing) and a Master of Business Administration from SHSU. Katelyn began her career at the university as a student assistant in the Dean of Students Office, later serving as a Program Coordinator for the TRIO department and the Annual Giving Coordinator for Alumni Relations & Annual Giving. A passionate advocate for the university, Katelyn enjoys crafting, puzzles, and building LEGO sets in her free time. 

Erika Lawrence | Online Student Success Specialist 

Erika Lawrence, originally from Huntsville, Texas, holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Sociology from SHSU. Erika is thrilled to contribute to the growth of SHSU Online and looks forward to assisting students throughout their academic journeys. When she isn’t helping students, Erika enjoys gardening, traveling to new places, and playing board games or the NEX Playground with her husband and children. She is currently busy planning her family’s next vacation: a Disney cruise. 

Sergio Ontiveros | Online Student Success Specialist 

Sergio Ontiveros brings a deep commitment to service and education to the team. Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Anthony, New Mexico, Sergio served in the United States Army with the 3rd Infantry Division stationed at Fort Sumner before transitioning into higher education. After separating from the military in 2023, he earned a Bachelor’s in Computer Science (2024) and an MS in Information Technology Management and Cybersecurity (2025). He is currently pursuing a second master’s degree. Sergio lives in Willis, Texas, with his wife and young son, and finds it rewarding to make higher education accessible and empowering for all students.
