Six SHSU Doctoral Students Selected as Texas Leadership Research Scholars

The Sam Houston State University Graduate & Professional School secured state funding to support six doctoral students through the Texas Leadership Research Scholars (TLRS) Program beginning in fall 2026. The students selected for the program are Michelle Akinkuolie, Forrest Floyd, Raven Pigee, Christavia Willridge, Kailee Marchand and Jasmine Sierra.

“We are proud to support these outstanding doctoral students through the Texas Leadership Research Scholars Program, which represents a significant investment in their success and in the future of research at Sam Houston State University,” Jennifer Bunn, dean of the SHSU Graduate & Professional School said. “These scholarships provide more than financial assistance. They provide the opportunities for students to develop as researchers, leaders and professionals who will make a lasting impact in their fields and communities.”

This initiative provides financial support to high-achieving doctoral students while fostering leadership, research excellence and academic success. The six scholars joining the fall 2026 TLRS cohort will each receive a renewable scholarship of $19,884 annually for up to four years, contingent upon continued eligibility and program participation.

In addition to financial support, the scholars will participate in a comprehensive program of academic support, mentoring, leadership development and professional development coordinated by the Graduate & Professional School.
