Sam Houston State University Charter School Opens New Location in Klein

The Sam Houston State University Charter School is expanding its reach to more children and families in the greater Houston area by opening a new location in Klein.

Founded in 2017, the SHSU Charter School serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students through its tuition-free, open-enrollment public charter program, with three campuses located in the North Houston area.

“By serving children, families and the broader educational community, we advance the university’s mission while preparing future educators and demonstrating what research-based instructional excellence can accomplish,” said Craig Toney, SHSU Charter School superintendent. “This expansion allows us to extend that service to another community while strengthening the connection between the university and public education”

Charter schools are public schools of choice that operate with greater flexibility than traditional public schools, allowing them to pursue specific educational goals while being exempt from certain state and local regulations.

“As a university charter school, our responsibility extends beyond educating students,” said Toney. “Every new campus provides another opportunity to model research-based instructional practices, develop outstanding educators and demonstrate what is possible when high expectations, strong instruction and meaningful relationships come together.”

This new location in Klein maintains the SHSU Charter School mission to be a transformational learning model through a choice education system that can be replicated by independent school districts across Texas so young students can experience academic, emotional and social success while they pursue their life ambitions.

“It represents an opportunity to extend a proven educational model to more families while remaining true to who we are,” said Toney. “Our commitment has always been to provide exceptional instruction, meaningful relationships and a learning environment where every child is known, valued and challenged.”

SHSU Charter School’s newest campus, located at FM 2920 in Spring, Texas (77388), is currently enrolling students in kindergarten through second grade.
