Melanie Sturm, a Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) second-year student, was recently awarded the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association’s (TOMA) Student Doctor of the Year Award at the association’s 70th annual conference. Sturm accepted the award amongst a swarm of supporters, as this year’s conference was held at SHSU-COM.

“I was incredibly honored and humbled to be considered for this award. Receiving it was a meaningful moment that affirmed the time and energy I have dedicated to serving my school and community,” Sturm said. “Knowing that my efforts have had a positive impact on others was deeply rewarding and reminded me why I am so passionate about leadership, community engagement and caring for people.”

The second-year osteopathic medical student was drawn to SHSU-COM by its mission to improve healthcare access and outcomes across Texas, which aligns with her goal of practicing rural medicine and advocating for community health needs. She has already made strides toward her goal by taking on many leadership roles.

Sturm is the current president of the Osteopathic Student Government Association and serves on the wellness and public relations committees for the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents. She also serves as secretary for the Student American Academy of Osteopathy, treasurer for Walking for Wellness, member of the Medical Humanities Board, Mentors in Medicine mentor and an active member of TOMA’s Exploratory Committee.

“The Texas Osteopathic Medical Association holds a special place in my heart, and I hope to continue serving the organization in the future, potentially even as a member of its leadership,” she said. “Experiences like this motivate me to carry my values of service, dedication, and advocacy forward into my career as a physician committed to caring for my patients and strengthening the communities I serve.”
