The 2017 AMTA (American Music Therapy Association) Conference: A Mindful Approach to Music Therapy, took place at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. The theme reminds music therapy professionals the importance of self-care. Attending this conference gave SHSU music therapy students the opportunity to network with students from other music therapy schools and professional music therapists, increase their knowledge about the different populations and techniques in music therapy, and attend student led business meetings.

During the conference, there were sessions for board-certified music therapists: music workshops, committee meetings, regional meetings, student led business meetings, exhibit explorations, and an internship fair. For individuals who are current board-certified music therapists, they offered CBMT (Certification Board for Music Therapists) meetings that count towards CMTE (Continuing Music Therapy Education). These continuing education courses are required for professionals to maintain their board certification every five years. Attending this conference allowed students the opportunity to become more knowledgeable about the current events in the world of music therapy, it helped them network with Sam Houston State University alumni, future internship directors and future employers. It also allowed participants to meet students/young adults around their age who will become lifelong friends and colleagues. Members who have an American Music Therapy Association membership were awarded a certification of attendance and 5 CMTE credits on their records.
