Cheer - Tryouts and Work Days

Cheer Tryout Information:

Important Dates:

May 11, 2023: Tryout Video links and Letter of Intent must be submitted for all candidates who do not think they will make it to in person tryouts.

May 12 & 13, 2023:  In Person Tryouts will be held at SHSU campus

May 12 Doors open at 5pm and Tryouts begin at 6pm

May 13 Doors open at 9am and Tryouts begin at 10am.

May 14: 2023-2024 Cheer Team is officially announced to public and have first official practices.

May 14 Doors open at 9am and Begin at 9:30am

 

General Requirements:

Freshman/Transfer Students-

  • Accepted to Sam Houston State University for Fall 

Current SHSU students-

  • Enrolled full time (Undergraduate:12 hours, Graduate: 9 hours)
  • Current GPA of 2.0 or above

Extensive Cheer Training/Experience is a prerequisite

One Letter of Intent stating why you want to be part of the Sam Houston State University Cheer Team and what you feel you would bring to our team.

Not allowed to participate in Fall Greek Recruitment

Video Requirements:

INTRODUCTION:                                  

Please start your video by introducing yourself

  1. Name
  2. Please state in video-why you want to be part of the Sam Houston Cheer Team and what you feel you would bring to our team.
  3. Age and school you are graduating/transferring from
  4. Position (flyer, back spot, base, tumbler, stunter)

TUMBLING:

 If you have to use spring floor for your videos, that is fine. However, you should be able to do all tumbling submitted on hard/dead floor as well.

 All tumbling must meet the AACCA guidelines (NO DOUBLE FULLS)

  • 3 standing tucks or fulls (these must be in the same video)
  • Standing tumbling pass

Example: Standing 2 back handsprings full

  • Running tumbling pass

Example: Roundoff back handspring full

 

FIGHT SONG AND CHEER:

Both the fight song and cheer will have a standing tuck in them. If you cannot do a standing tuck, you can improvise and do a standing back handspring, or a toe touch jump.

We are looking for SHARP motions, correct motion placement, CONFIDENCE, and high energy in both the fight song and cheer.

STUNTS:

STUNTS (MALES) COED:

All stunting must meet the AACCA guidelines

For the stunting portion, we are looking at technique from basics to elite stunts.  All stunts need to be true coed stunts. (If you are new to coed stunting and need an assist, we will accept your video, NO GROUP STUNTING)

In the stunting portion of your video, please include:

  • One toss stunt with a clean straight pop off
    • Examples: Toss hands, extension, lib, full up, etc.
  • A stunt sequence of your choice. This should include two stunts and a dismount (double down preferred)

 As a male, if you are more of a tumbler, please be sure to show elite tumbling in the tumbling portion of your video.

 

STUNTS (FEMALES) COED:

For the stunting portion, we are looking at technique and body control from basics to elite stunts. 

In the stunting portion of your video, please include:

  • One toss stunt with a clean straight pop off
    • Examples: Toss hands, extension, lib, full up, etc.
  • A stunt sequence of your choice. This should include two stunts and a dismount.
  • Double down from stretch or arabesque

 

STUNTS (FEMALES) ALLGIRL:

For the stunting portion, we are looking at technique from basics to elite stunts. Please make sure to state your position (top girl, back spot, side base, main base)

In the stunting portion of your video, please include:

  • A stunt sequence of your choice. This should include two stunts and a dismount. (double down preferred)

  • (please make sure they are marked as UNLISTED so only those with the link can see your video)
