First Year Housing Policy

All students entering SHSU within 1 year of high school are required to reside on-campus and purchase a University Resident Meal Plan their first year of college, usually fall and spring semesters.

Important Dates for Housing Applications

Summer 2024 Term

February 1Housing Application Opens to new students who have been admitted to Sam Houston State University. At this time, only the Personal and Contact Details, Medical information, Questionnaire, and Contract tabs are available.

All housing information and notifications will be sent to the students’ SHSU email account.

Room Selection

Summer Assignments will be sent out at the beginning of May.

 

2024-2025 Academic Year

October 1 – Housing Application Opens to new students who have been admitted to Sam Houston State University. At this time, only the Personal and Contact Details, Medical information, Questionnaire, and Contract tabs are available.

All housing information and notifications will be sent to the students’ SHSU email account.

March 1 - Roommate Selection Opens - Students who have applied for housing may search for a roommate. The following conditions must exist before a roommate request can be honored: (1) both students must have a completed housing application on file for the same term, (2) both students must have provided evidence of Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination, (3) both students must request and confirm each other online and (4) during room selection a double occupancy room must exist.

Confirming Roommates: When two students request each other as roommates and have applied at separate times, the web self assign timeslot of the roommate pair will be based upon the latest complete application date. Either student can go into the system at this time to select a room. Applicants should be aware that if their requested roommate does not confirm their request online or cancels their application, they will be assigned a web self assign timeslot based upon their individual application date.

Roommate requests are not guaranteed and it is the student's responsibility to ensure that when selecting a room, if they have a confirmed roommate request, that the roommate is also placed in the room. Requesting a roommate after you have chosen a room will not automatically pull the person into that room.

Room Swap

Once a student has a housing assignment, this tab will be available to monitor other open spaces. Through this tab a student can “swap” their room assignment. It will only move them and not their roommate, regardless if they are confirmed or not.

Round 1 of Room Selection

First Week in May – First round of emails notifying students of their room selection

Timeslots will only be sent to the students’ SHSU E-mail account.

First round: Anyone who applies October 1 – April 1 who has Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination verification on file at the SHSU Health Center.

Second Week in May -  First round of room selection timeslots begin. Each student’s timeslot has a unique date and time dependent on when the housing application deposit was paid (as well as verification of Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination with the SHSU Health Center) and whether or not a confirmed roommate is on file.

Round 2 of Room Selection

Second Week in June – Second round of emails notifying students of their room selection timeslots will be sent to the students’ SHSU email account.

Second round: Anyone who applies April 2 – May 31 who has Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination verification on file at the SHSU Health Center. Each student’s timeslot has a unique date and time dependent on when the housing application deposit was paid (as well as verification of Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination with the SHSU Health Center) and whether or not a confirmed roommate is on file.

Round 3 of Room Selection

First Week in July – Third round of emails notifying students of their room selection

Timeslots will be sent to the students’ SHSU email account.

Third round: Anyone who applies June 1 – July 1 who has Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination verification on file at the SHSU Health Center. Each student’s timeslot has a unique date and time dependent on when the housing application deposit was paid (as well as verification of Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination with the SHSU Health Center) and whether or not a confirmed roommate is on file.

July 15 – Self Select Ends -  Room Changes for the 2024-2025 Academic Year will close at 5 pm on July 15. Applicants who have not selected a room or apply after that date will be assigned by the Residence Life Department.

Spring 2025 Term

October 1 – Housing Application Opens to new students who have been admitted to Sam Houston State University. At this time, only the Personal and Contact Details, Medical Information, Questionnaire, and Contract tabs are available.

All housing information and notifications will be sent to the students’ SHSU email account.

Room Assignment

Students must have a paid housing deposit, completed the housing application and have their Bacterial Vaccination documentation uploaded to the SHSU Student Health Center Patient Portal in order to receive a room assignment. Rooms will be assigned by Residence Life in mid-December. Students will be sent their room assignment to their SHSU email account. Your fee statement will reflect housing and dining charges mid December.
