DEI Institute

The DEI Institute is a Comprehensive DEI Certification Program, offering a multifaceted approach to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training on the campus. The program is a collaborative initiative sponsored by the College of Education and the Office of Diversity & Inclusion. Faculty and staff will be offered different levels of participation in the DEI Institute including both self-paced and cohort/selection style opportunities.

Earn an Ally Certification

This certification track is designed for SHSU faculty and staff interested in learning more about DEI from a foundational at their own pace. Upon completion, you will earn a certificate, DEI Shirt and an invitation to an recognization ceremony. To earn your certificate, you must complete the required courses listed below.

Foundations in Diversity & Inclusion

The first of the core course series is designed to create better understanding of the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). This first workshop offers a foundation for defining diversity, equity and inclusion, along with the barriers and obstacles to meaningful DEI work.

Developing & Implementing Inclusive Practices

The second workshop will examine the university environment, including space, programs and curriculum, to determine their impact on the university’s campus climate.

Unconscious Bias

This workshop will explore unconscious and everyday bias in higher education. The presentation focuses on ways to identify and address unconscious bias for improved professional relationships and communication.

Equity vs Equality

In the final core workshop of the beginners track, participants will examine the distinct difference between equity and equality; discuss historical and ongoing inequities in higher education; and build skills for fostering equity.
