In weekly sessions, Freshmen Leaders participate in presentations and discussions, in order to gain understanding and familiarity with SHSU and its resources, as well as enhance skills and abilities needed to serve as effective leaders in the university setting and beyond. Presentations emphasize diversity, learning, service, and leadership skills and techniques. Members of the Freshmen Leadership Program meet every Wednesday during the academic year between 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The Freshmen Leadership Program also places a strong emphasis on service to the university and community. Freshmen Leaders coordinate and participate in service projects and campus activities throughout both semesters, with members contributing over 1,200 combined hours of community service.
Once accepted to the program, Freshmen Leaders must meet certain requirements in order to remain in the program and be eligible to receive their scholarship each semester. Freshmen must attend all meetings and functions unless told otherwise, and assist with certain university activities. They must also maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, complete a designated number of community service hours each semester, and be involved in other programs and organizations on campus.
Participation in the Freshmen Leadership Program also provides students with a number of benefits.
These include but are not limited to:
- Leadership training & experience
- Networking opportunities
- Lifelong friendships
- A scholarship during both fall and spring of their freshmen year
