  • What does the Orientation fee cover?
    Freshmen:
    • The $140 non-refundable student fee for Freshmen Orientation covers lodging in a residence hall, lunch and dinner on the first night, breakfast on the second day, and all orientation materials.
    • The $50 guest fee covers all orientation materials, lunch and dinner on the first night, as well as our wine and cheese parent reception.
    • The $30 sibling fee covers all orientation activities, lunch and dinner on the first night, as well as orientation materials.

    Transfer:
    • The $50 non-refundable student fee for Transfer Orientation covers lunch and all orientation materials.
    • The $20 guest fee for Transfer Orientation covers lunch and all orientation materials.
    • A $10 Walk-in Fee will be charged for students that walk into Transfer Orientation. 
  • Is Orientation mandatory?
    • All 2019-2020 high school graduates are REQUIRED to attend. Transfer hours do not count.
    • All students who graduated high school BEFORE the 2019-2020 academic year are eligible to attend Transfer Orientation regardless of the number of credit hours they have earned.
  • What will happen during Orientation?
    • Orientation is a two-day program designed to help new students acclimate to campus. Students can register for classes during Orientation. The Orientation program features activities to assist students with their academic and social transition.
  • When will I be academically advised?
  • What is the TSI and am I exempt?
    • Students attending Texas public institutions of higher education must be in compliance with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). The law requires all entering college students to be assessed for college readiness in mathematics, reading, and writing unless the student qualifies for an exemption.
    • In order to be ADVISED and REGISTER, students must meet TSI requirements.
    • To view your current TSI status: Visit MySam and select the "Registration" tab. From the "Registration Toolbox" you can check your TSI status or view test scores.
  • When can I take the TSI during Orientation?
  • What if I cannot pay for Orientation?
    • If you cannot pay for Orientation, our office offers fee deferments to students who have completed the financial aid process and meet the requirements set.  The deferred fee can only apply to the student fee and will appear on the following semester fee statement.  To begin the process please complete the Orientation Fee Deferment Form.  Please allow 10 business days for your request to be processed.  If you have additional questions, please email us at orientation@shsu.edu.
  • What if I cannot attend Orientation?
  • How do I register for Orientation?
    • Students can register at https://orientation.shsu.edu. Please be aware that all students registering for Bearkat Orientation understand and agree to the Orientation Policies. As a registered participant, students are agreeing to abide to the policies that have been set forth by the Accepted Students & Bearkat Orientation Office. Registration closes one week before the session start date or when the session has reached capacity, whichever comes first.
  • What if I’m 17 years old or younger?
    • If you are under 18 years old, your parent or guardian will need to fill out a medical release form.
  • How do I change my Orientation session?
    • Please e-mail the Accepted Students and Bearkat Orientation office at orientation@shsu.edu. Be sure to include your name, SAM ID, session you are currently registered for and the session you would like to change to. You will receive e-mail confirmation once your session has been changed. If you change your session less than one week before the session start date, a $10 late fee will apply.
  • What if I can't change my orientation date online?
    • Please e-mail the Accepted Students and Bearkat Orientation office at orientation@shsu.edu. Be sure to include your name, SAM ID, session you are currently registered for and the session you would like to change to. You will receive e-mail confirmation once your session has been changed.
