The Academic Success Center at Sam Houston State University uses a peer-based model for helping students, and as such, we are always looking for motivated, qualified individuals who are undergraduate or graduate students at SHSU. All students at Sam Houston State University enrolled in 6 or more credit hours of courses are able to work for the university as a student employee. The Academic Success Center has many opportunities for work study and other work aid programs. Although each area has a specific focus and set of qualifications, anyone looking to join our team can expect the following qualifications: 

Qualifications

  • At least a sophomore with two semesters complete at SHSU by end of current term (preferred)
  • A completed FAFSA document for the current academic term (preferred)
  • Letters of recommendation from staff/instructors familiar with your area of expertise
  • An overall SHSU GPA of 3.0 or above 
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Can expect to work an average of 15 hours

  • Become a Writing Tutor

    Job Description

    Applicants will work as undergraduate peer tutors at the Writing and Humanities division of the Academic Success Center and can expect to work with SHSU students from any level or discipline on student writing. Applicants will have the opportunity to tutor more advanced topics, including but not limited to: Speech, Online, Groups, Workshops, and Presentations. Tutors typically work between 10-20 hours per week with 14 hours being the current average. 

    As peer writing tutors, student employees would work with students to improve their writing and to review proper format and citation for various areas. This job focuses on revision and content creation over line editing, and it is our objective to ensure that student clients are taught lifelong learning stills and strategies instead of quick fixes to problems.


  • Become a Math/Science Tutor

    Job Description

    Math and science tutors work closely with instructors to provide tutoring that is aligned with expectations in the courses. We hire tutors to support mathematics courses up to MATH 1420. Some tutors are embedded in courses to work alongside students in the learning process. We hire tutors in Chemistry, Physics, and other courses. Math and science tutors work closely with instructors to provide tutoring that is aligned with expectations in the courses. We hire tutors to support mathematics courses up to MATH 1420.     Qualifications

    • Successfully completed the course(s) in which you will tutor (required)
    • Completed FAFSA document for the current academic term (preferred)
    • GPA of 3.0 or above (required)
    • Letters of recommendation or recommendation form from instructors in content area

  • Become a Welcome Desk Ambassador

    Job Description

    Welcome Desk Ambassadors promote the services, programs, and initiatives of the Academic Success Center (ASC). Ambassadors support and empower all students to succeed academically and encourage the development students. Welcome Desk Ambassadors typically work between 10-15 hours per week. 

    Welcome Desk Ambassadors can expect to great guests and offer assistance, answer incoming calls, guide students to appropriate services, introduce new students, faculty, and staff to the services we offer, and aid in ideas for branding and promotion among the ASC.


  • Become a Coach or Mentor

    Job Description

    Peer coaches or mentors help incoming, transfer, and returning SHSU students set and meet academic goals. Peer educators act as guides to help students connect with resources and build academic habits.

    Qualifications

    • GPA of 3.0 or above (required)
    • Resume/Cover Letter
    • Successful interview
    • Passion for helping others
    • Completed FAFSA document for the current academic term (preferred)
    • Letters of recommendation or recommendation form from instructors in content area
