Writing and Humanities Tutoring

The Academic Success Center at Sam Houston State University serves the students of SHSU in any of their written academic endeavors. Our goal is to help students become better writers and to develop more confidence in their writing abilities.

ASC tutors provide one-on-one and small group instruction for writing and humanities subjects. We help students on any writing assignments ranging from English composition essays to science lab reports and anything in between. We help students learn preparatory prewriting, revising, and editing skills by working with them on the writing tasks they bring in.

Online appointments are conducted using Zoom and scheduled 1 hour in advance, and on-campus appointments are conducted face-to-face in the main floor (2nd floor) of the Newton Gresham Library in Huntsville. When scheduling, you will receive a confirmation link as soon as you schedule your appointment with a Zoom link included (if applicable) in the details. Students will need a webcam with a microphone on a standalone desktop or laptop computer for the best online experience, and on-campus students should come prepared with their assignment guidelines and paper printed out.

    Students of any classification at Sam Houston State University can use this service to receive help on any writing or humanities-based assignment or project. Students will work one-on-one with an Academic Success Center Writing and Humanities Peer Tutor in order to identify areas of concern and learn how to address them for current and subsequent papers. Our tutors are able to assist with grammar, mechanics, formatting (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), flow, academic voice, and other writing-related revision concerns.

    Our tutors will not catch every mistake on your paper. Instead, their objective is to work with you to teach you the skills necessary to address concerns found in your paper or project on your own. With over 20 different tutors available, we recommend finding one that fits your style best and returning to them for subsequent visits.

Math and Science Tutoring

The Academic Success Center at Sam Houston State University promotes learning and development in mathematics and other STEM courses by providing a safe and encouraging environment for all students, so that they may maximize their potential as they work toward achieving academic success and progress forward to a lifetime of self-sufficient learning.

    Ada Lovelace Online Tutoring (A.L.O.T.)

    The ASC provides online tutoring for mathematics and the mathematics portions of STEM courses via the Ava Lovelace Online Tutoring (A.L.O.T.). This service is designed to mirror our usual face-to-face sessions, with the goal of providing an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all participants.     Upon enrollment, you will have access to drop-in tutoring. Although appointments are not required, you may request tutoring for times that best suit your needs. To get started with a session, follow the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Access Instructions below.

    Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Access Instructions

    Go to https://online.shsu.edu/campus/, log into blackboard and follow these steps to gain access to a tutoring session.

      • Under the “My Organizations” banner, click the link “Math Center Online Tutoring-ASC”
      • Click the “A.L.O.T.” tab to access tutoring sessions
      • Choose a room from “Sessions”
      • Click on the room for the course in which you need support.
      • Click the button “Join Session”
      • Lastly, follow the tutor’s instruction for a successful session

    TIPS:

    • Create a folder with documents you may wish to share during your session.
    • To get the most out of a session, ask the tutor questions.

World Languages and Culture Tutoring

The Academic Success Center at Sam Houston State University values and understands the importance of social impact. As a result of that commitment, we are now expanding our services beyond the traditional subjects of Math, Sciences and Writing.

Language Tutors the Academic Success Center (ASC) will support all classification of students in advancing their competencies in the languages offered. Tutoring sessions will be conducted either face-to-face or online to support and accommodate individual requests or small-groups. Appointments are strongly recommended to ensure our tutors provide the highest quality of service, however, walk-in services are welcomed. A typical day will include but is not limited to: assisting students with study strategies, content review/interpretation and mastery in understanding/ comprehension.

COBA Tutoring

The Academic Success Center (ASC) at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) serves the students of SHSU by supporting the College of Business and Administration (COBA) courses with tutors from the ASC, COBA, and volunteers from Beta Alpha Psi (BAP).

Our tutors provide one-on-one and small group tutoring. These appointments can be face to face or virtual.  Students can receive support in ACCT 2301/2302, ECON 2300/2301/2302, BANA 2372/3363, FINC 3310/3320, and other upper-level ECON 3000-4000 courses.

    Students enrolled in COBA supported courses can use this service to receive help on assignments, study preparation or projects. Students will work one-on-one or in small groups with a COBA tutor or BAP volunteer in the ASC. Our tutors and volunteers can assist with COBA inquiries but will not do the work or assignments for you. Tutors will guide learning, explain content, and point out study strategies in support of building independent study habits.
