Student Life
Lowman Student Center (LSC)

The LSC is a great place to grab some lunch, hang out with friends, or get some study time in between classes. Grab a seat on the stair-step benches, enjoy the view out of the floor-length windows overlooking The Yard, and get a first-hand look at campus life from the comforts of an air-conditioned building – a much needed rescue from the Texas summer heat!
The LSC houses great food options at the Paw Print on the first floor, or stop by the second floor Starbucks for your caffeine fix. Stop by the University Bookstore for all your Bearkat gear!

SHSU Traditions
shsu.edu/dept/student-activities/tradition.html
Traditions are an integral part of campus life at Sam Houston State and help define our culture. From Homecoming to the Tree of Light ceremony, these long-standing traditions can be shared across generations and bring Bearkats together with a sense of pride and belonging. These enduring traditions provide us with a sense of timelessness and continuity; whether it is attending every Bearkat football game, paying homage to members of our Bearkat community who have passed away at the annual Raven’s Call or marching to Sam Houston’s gravesite in Oakwood Cemetery on Texas Independence Day, these traditions are entrenched in student life and allow us to connect with our classmates, alumni and alma mater.
ELITE
SH ELITE (Establishing Leadership In & Through Education) is a minority male program established in 2010 to help increase minority retention and graduation rates. The purpose of the SH ELITE program is to enable Black & Hispanic males to transcend the status quo in minority male academic, professional and personal success.

Office of Institutional Diversity & Inclusion
shsu.edu/dept/diversity-inclusion/
True diversity is not only described as differences in individual backgrounds, personal identities, political affiliations, intellectual approaches, and demographics. It is rooted also in the removal of barriers for marginalized groups and in the creation of spaces and opportunities that allow individuals to engage in the full life of the University. Sam Houston State University is committed to promoting a campus culture that embraces diversity and inclusion.
