Geology Degree Transfer Pathway
The Geology Program at Sam Houston State University would like to invite you to contact us, visit us if possible, and eventually join the program. The objectives of the Geology Program are to train professional geologists and to prepare teachers of science. Students completing the Bachelor of Science degree are prepared for careers in industry, academia, government, and for admission to advanced degree programs.
All Geology majors and minors at SHSU must complete GEOL 1405 (GEOL 1305/1105) or Geology 1403 (1303/1103), plus GEL 1404 (1304/1104). There are two geology major degree plans. Plan I is targeted toward the individual planning on attending graduate school or entering industry. Plan II, the Geoscience Plan, is for an individual planning for a geotech position. The degree specific requirements will vary depending upon the geology degree plan. Additional information may be found at https://www.shsu.edu/~gel_geo/.
For further information about our program and the degrees that we offer, please see our web site at https://www.shsu.edu/~gel_geo/, or email Dr. Brian Cooper (Department Chair) at bjcooper@shsu.edu.

The baccalaureate degree in Geology requires the following for all majors::
- A 26-hour core. This represents the body of knowledge that all geology professionals should know.
- A maximum of 66 transfer credit hours (“C” or better excluding kinesiology) may be applied to a degree at SHSU. Students should carefully select courses to complete the associate degree while minimizing the number of hours that might exceed the 66-hour cap for transfer credit
