Scholarships and Awards

To Apply for the Following Scholarships:

Scholarships are awarded annually each Spring and are distributed over two semesters (Fall and Spring) contingent upon enrollment and solid academic standing. To apply, students must submit an application directly to Scholarships4Kats (https://www.shsu.edu/dept/financial-aid/scholarships/), and send all the required documents to the Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Dr. Jin Young Choi. Required documents consist of: (1) a letter of application illustrating the candidate’s background, specific sociological areas of interest, and the reasons that make her/him a good candidate for the appropriate scholarship; (2) unofficial SHSU transcripts; and (3) one letter of recommendation. Please send all the required documents via e-mail to the Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Dr. Jin Young Choi. The file name of each attached document must include the applicant’s name; for example: “ChoiApplicationLetter.” Required documents for each of the available scholarships can be also sent via U.S. Mail. They should be mailed to:

The deadline for all scholarships is November 15, 2019. To be considered, submissions of both applications to Scholarships4Kats and required documents to the Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Dr. Jin Young Choi, must be received by the above-mentioned deadline. 

***Please note that applicants need to submit only one set of the required application materials to be considered for all scholarships.


Professor Ramsey M. Woods Sociology Endowment Fund (Undergraduate)

Awarded each semester to full-time undergraduate students, in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University; and majoring in Sociology. Financial need will be a consideration, but not a determining factor. An overall GPA of at least 3.2 is required.


Dan and Donna Beto Endowed Scholarship in Sociology 

One annual scholarship of $1,000. Recipients must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student (with preference given to graduate students) in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University; and majoring in Sociology. An overall GPA of at least 3.0 is required. Financial need will be a consideration, but not a determining factor.


Garry and Marjorie Prince Sociology Scholarship
Recipient must be full-time student, in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University; majoring in Sociology; demonstrating financial need; and maintaining an overall GPA of at least 3.0. 


Walter & Minnie Bennett Scholarship
Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate (freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior) student in good standing; enrolled at Sam Houston State University; majoring in sociology; demonstrate a particular interest in the study of Marriage and the Family or Community. Financial need will be a consideration, but not a determining factor. An overall GPA of at least 3.0 is required.


Department of Sociology Scholarship

Recipient must be an undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Sociology. Student recognized for past academic achievements and potential contributions to discipline of sociology.


Ruth A. De Blanc Endowed Scholarship

Recipient must be an undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU in a minimum of three credit hours per semester; majoring in Sociology; and demonstrate financial need. An overall GPA of at least 3.0 is required.
