Director's Welcome

Dear Future Family Physician,

Greetings! It is so wonderful that you are interested in our Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC) OakBend Family Medicine Residency Program (ACGME: 1204800014; NRMP: 2291120C1). Our mission here in Richmond, Texas, is to train future family medicine physicians in rural and underserved areas of Texas with a focus on Fort Bend County and surrounding rural areas. Our goal here is to help prepare you for any direction that you wish to proceed after completion of your program.

Here at OakBend Medical Group, we have three no-wait emergency rooms, 247 hospital beds, three surgery centers, 21 physical therapy clinics, we are CAP accredited, and are a not-for-profit hospital. We are a university-sponsored, community-based program that specializes in comprehensive training which includes a broad range of rotations over your next three years in a small class size of only four residents each year.

I feel no greater sense of pride than being the Program Director for this residency program. We hope to meet each of you soon and I look forward to helping teach you over the next three years.

Rotations are designed to provide broad exposure to family medicine in a diverse and growing suburban and rural patient population.

Unique Local Patient Population

OakBend Medical Center is a community-based hospital that serves a diverse suburban and rural population and offers a wide scope of family medicine care. Residents gain experience managing both common and complex conditions while building relationships in a patient-centered environment. Opportunities to serve medically underserved patients and to be involved in community-based outreach initiatives are also available.

Didactics

Didactics are scheduled weekly, typically on Friday afternoons, and include case presentations, interactive lectures, and hands-on procedure training. Sessions are led by residency faculty and SHSU-COM educators. There will be opportunities for residents to present clinical topics, review current literature, and participate in collaborative learning alongside peers.

Curriculum

The program incorporates the DeckerMed Family Medicine Weekly Curriculum™, an online educational platform aligned with the ABFM Certification Exam Blueprint. This digital curriculum provides structured weekly topics, clinical guidelines, and review materials to support residents in their clinical education and board preparation.

Journal Club

Journal Club is ongoing throughout the academic year where residents will discuss medical journals and their applicability to the clinical setting. Residents will have autonomy in selecting the articles and will all have the opportunity to present.

Hospital Committees

Residents are encouraged to participate in hospital committees such as Tumor Board, Cardiology Committee, Trauma Committee and many more. Residents can connect with hospital directors and other physicians during the committee meetings.
