Mavis Yarbrough

Mavis Yarbrough serves as the Clinical Coordinator working in the Piney Woods Region for SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a native of East Texas and lives in Nacogdoches. Mavis received her undergrad education from Angelina College in Early Childhood development. She transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Family Development and Human Services, a Master’s degree of Interdisciplinary Studies (Special Education, Counseling and Social Work) and a Masters’ degree in Social Work.

Mavis has over 30 years of experience working with individuals, families, groups and communities in Rural East Texas. Her interest in social determinants of health and social justice has been instrumental in her success in improving services in her surrounding communities. Working in early childhood development she spent a great deal of time working to help families locate resources and services to improve their quality of life. Recently in the non-profit sector she was involved in providing health career pipeline activities and services for high school students. She also coordinated volunteer and job shadowing opportunities in the medical field. In higher education she was field instructor for, Health Science, Social Work, Bachelor and Master level interns. She has used her skills as a Mental Health Adult & Youth First Aid Instructor and a DSHS Community Health Worker Instructor to provided training for individuals and groups in her surrounding communities.

Mavis understands the health disparities in Rural East Texas and the issues communities face. She is excited to be part of the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine team that will improve health services in East Texas.
