John McCroskey grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota where he began studying trombone in the sixth grade and continued until completing his studies at Manhattan School of Music in New York where he studied trombone with Ed Herman, Jr., Principal Trombonist of the New York Philharmonic, and Ed Kleinhammer, Bass Trombonist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. During studies at Manhattan School of Music, John did free-lance work and was privileged to play in the American Symphony Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski, Conductor. After playing in the Fellowship Orchestra at the Tanglewood Festival, he toured with the American National Opera Company from Boston, MA. He continued as Second Trombonist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for four years, and Principal and Co-Principal with the Houston Symphony Orchestra for 27 years. Since retirement from HSO, he has free-lanced with the Houston Symphony, the Houston Ballet, and the Houston Grand Opera. He has also served as trombone instructor in high schools in the Houston area, Blinn College in Brenham, TX, the University of Houston, and Sam Houston State University. John resides in Brenham, TX with his wife, Lydia.
