Since 2015, Dr. Jacob Sustaita, Director of Orchestral Activities, has led the Sam Houston State Symphony Orchestra. Under the direction of Dr. Sustaita, the orchestra gave the American premiere of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 1 (original Linz version) and performed as a featured orchestra at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, TX.
The orchestra performs in collaboration with many departments at the University in a mix of classic and contemporary repertoire. Faculty members, Guest Artists, and winners of the School of Music Concerto Competition perform regularly as soloists with the orchestra. Each semester, the orchestra performs 4-6 concerts and engages all of the major orchestral genres including symphonic, chamber, opera, and ballet.
Membership for all Orchestra’s is open to SHSU students of all majors. A competitive audition, held at the beginning of each semester, is required for membership.
Audition music and audition dates will be posted at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters, and auditions will be held approximately one day prior to the first day of classes each semester (fall and spring). Information can be found on the ENSEMBLE AUDITION PAGE.
