Single Reed Institute

JUNE 9-12, 2024

Registration Deadline: May 24, 2024

Resident Camper: $350
Commuter:$275 (commuters are responsible for all parking expenses)

The Single Reed Institute is a unique opportunity for young clarinet and saxophone players with at least 3 years of playing experience to participate in music making outside of their own school program. Students will have the opportunity to work with SHSU faculty Patricia Card (clarinet) and Masahito Sugihara (saxophone). The Institute is structured to improve individual performance skills, while allowing the campers to interact with other young musicians in music and socially. Space is limited so register soon!

A Typical Day at Camp

Each day will be filled with music instruction and social activities. A typical day will include:

  • technique boot camp
  • chamber music
  • masterclasses
  • music elective
  • recreation time
  • afternoon and night activities

Afternoon & Night Activities

Afternoon and night activities will vary day-to-day. Activities may include:

  • movie night
  • dance night
  • visits to the University Game Room
  • outdoor recreation

Auditions will be held the first day of the camp, immediately following camper check-in. Each camper should have a prepared piece/etude/excerpt that will demonstrate his/her best playing ability. The audition will help faculty determine appropriate ensemble placements and repertoire.

Single Reed Institute Recital

The final afternoon of the camp will feature a recital, with all students performing for parents and friends. The camp will be officially concluded at the end of the concert.
