Master of Education in Special Education
The M.Ed. in Special Education provides educators with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed to apply research, methods, and recommended practices for the effective assessment and instruction of learners with special needs in diverse school and community settings. Learn to evaluate and implement solutions to systemic injustices and cultural perspectives on disability. With four paths to best prepare educators with proficiencies and certification in educational and bilingual diagnostics and transition services, educators will be able to best serve learners with disabilities in diverse school and community settings.
Where and How Is This Program Available?
The M.Ed. in Special Education is an online program, with complimentary certifications available online, at Woodlands campus, and through field work.
Professional Growth
The Master of Special Education prepares educators with knowledge and expertise in innovative research and teaching practices for learners with disabilities. With this advanced understanding and skill set, educators will maximize their professional competence, career advancement, leadership roles, advocacy and systems’ change competencies.

Assist in Transitions
Combined with Transition Services Certification, learn to assess, counsel, and lead through the transition process for children with disabilities to move through the school system and gain skills necessary to thrive in a post-school environment according to learner needs and abilities.

Diagnose and Support
Combined with the additional Education Diagnostician Certification, the M.Ed. in Special Education prepares educators for certification to effectively assess, diagnose, and educate learners with disabilities in diverse range of school and community settings.

Emergent Bilingual Support
The Bilingual Diagnostician Certificate combined with the M.Ed. in Special Education provides candidates who have Spanish and English language proficiency the ability to evaluate Emergent Bilingual (EB) students as well as students who are monolingual English speakers. Graduate students proficient in Spanish and English, learn how to conduct assessments, interpret results, and make educational recommendations for learners in school settings.
